Research and planning tasks

Create a blogpost called 'Preliminary exercise: Research and planning' and complete the tasks below. First, watch this clip on the mistakes beginner filmmakers make - it will help you identify the errors to avoid when planning and shooting your film.

There are loads more tips and tutorials from Darius Britt (D4Darius on YouTube) that we would recommend watching as part of your research and planning. These include:

Now complete the following tasks:

1) State the genre you have chosen for your TV drama - family or crime drama.

The genre I have chosen for my TV drama is a bit of Family/crime

2) Choose at least three TV dramas similar to your concept and watch the trailer and one scene from each. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

Top Boy

The camerawork in Top boy is done very well this is because there are many different shots used in the show which make everything look more realistic for example in the trailer there are a lot of tracking shots which make it look all the more realistic. I also really like the closeups because they show the facial expressions which really show you how the character may be feeling and you can really see when someone is afraid in that situation and when someone isn't. There is fast paced editing in the trailer which makes the whole trailer a lot better.

The sinner

In this trailer, it is diverse to Luther and Top Boy, as I accept the story-line isn't the customary Crime dramatisation account. I accept the utilisation of moderate - pace altering was exceptionally successful in this trailer, and this could be considered as a key show from Crime dramatisations, so as to construct pressure. Moreover, the utilisation of various shots is clear in this short scene, for instance the building up shot is successful, additionally it would appear that they utilised an automaton to catch the vehicle from up above, and this demonstrates an assortment of shots, ideally I could use too, to make inventiveness to my trailer.

Luther

In Luther the use of costume is exceptionally exemplary to figure out who will be who and what kind of job they play. Luther is spruced up in a suit alongside a channel coat which enables the group of spectators to distinguish that he assumes a significant job in this TV arrangement and he is an investigator. The mutilation of low key lighting from 00:06 - 00:12 enables the group of spectators to make sense of that Luther is addressing a lawbreaker or somebody who is going to mess up him. Moreover, it could delineate that the female is connected to the examination he is dealing with. The utilisation of make-up at 00:05 is noteworthy for the group of spectators to assess that the character is certainly an opponent.
3) Write a script for your TV drama scene. You'll find guidance for writing a script in the BBC Writers' Room (click on the Script Library to read real examples of professional TV scripts).

Inside Moses House

Moses wakes up and gets ready after which he meets up with a few off his friends and they will drive off. Moses is nervous and scared for what might happen.

Inside his friends house

He meets up with his friends and they tell him to stop what hes doing or hes going to seriously get hurt.

Gym

He walks into a gym for the first time and everyone is staring at him he gets into the ring and gets ready to fight.

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre? Plan your cast, costume, make-up, props, lighting and setting. For this preliminary task, use just one location to keep it simple.

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required and what shots you will complete at each time/location.
